Today, we're talking about having short hair and how to prepare for the short hair lifestyle. Cutting your hair is a huge decision, but overall can be the most beneficial. This can be a hard decision, however your life isn't over because of your big chop. Whether it's a maintenance issue or your hair is fried and you need some change, these are the 5 ways to determine if you are ready for short hair.
Let's start by defining short hair. As a stylist, I'd consider my short hair clients to be anyone with hair shoulder length or above. If you're the kind of person who has always had long hair or is scared of chopping your locks, I have 5 steps to determine if you're ready for short hair. #1 Know that your hair doesn't define you: Although your hair is a huge part of who you are, you are not your hair. The most important step is self love. If you have a mindset going into your haircut of "oh my gosh, I'm chopping off my hair. I won't have hair", you're going to freak yourself out and this can overall lower your confidence. Hair grows back, whether it's a chop or a trim. A good haircut can help boost your confidence in so many ways if you allow it to. Having less maintenance, getting ready for your day, less tangles, and not having to put your hair in the same messy bun everyday can change your schedule and make your feel more put together. #2 You can still style your hair: I had a guest who cut off 7 inches of her hair. It started to get mated, tangled up all the time, and weighted. After her cut, she wasn't too sure about it. "How am I supposed to style my hair?" Is the most commonly asked question from my short haired guests. Unfortunately, hair tutorials on sites like YouTube can be hard to follow and difficult to achieve on your own. Don't be afraid to ask your stylist for easy, everyday styles. If you happen to find a picture online and want to try it out, give it go. You never know what looks good until you try it. My personal favorite short hair style is the half up/down bun. It's super simple, and keeps your hair out of your face all day. #3 Faster styling time: Having short hair has so many perks. Drying and styling times are less because you're working with a smaller canvas. Personally, I have had my hair go from down to my belly button and as short as my chin. Working with shorter hair is less hassle, time efficient, and easier when you're on the go. Both curling and straightening takes less time. If you still aren't ready for short hair, take a moment to think of how much time is spent styling your hair. Now, cut that time in half. It used to take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours depending on the style. Compared to having shorter hair where it takes about an hour or less. #4 split ends who?: While having long hair is nice, split ends can cause more breakage. This occurs when the split end continues to split up the hair shaft until it snaps off. This causes breakage through your hair. Cutting or trimming your hair helps stop the split end from traveling and helps your ends stay smooth and healthy. If you used heat on your hair, this may cause dryness from time to time or cause new split ends. Following up from your haircut, it's always important to have a good hair routine to keep your hair nice and healthy. #5 The 4 to 8 week rule: If you're still aren't ready for having short hair, it is important to keep up with trims. This time frame can vary depending on how fast your hair grows and when you regularly get it cut. Trims are recommended every 4 to 8 weeks. Contrary to popular belief, this will help your hair grow. Trimming your ends eliminates the chance of the split breaking your hair off.

Believe it or not, 2020 was a big year for new and reborn hair trends. Around March, stylists faced a time where salons were closed and had no way of working with clients. This gave clients time to have quarantine haircuts and color jobs gone wrong. If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that hair trends change constantly and without the help of our stylist things may not come out exactly as planned. Today, we're going to talk about the top 5 hair trends of 2020.
#1 Shaggy cuts The shag cut is coming back. Finding the inspiration from the 70's, the shag and mullet are coming back. As a stylist, I love the feathered bangs and layered look. However, the mullet depends on the person. Celebrities like Selena Gomez and Hillary Duff have been rocking the feathers bang. I am loving this trend and hope it continues in 2021. #2 Block coloring Coloring blocking has made a huge rise this year. This trend has been blowing up on social media sites such as Tik Tok and YouTube. Coloring blocking is a fun way to add a pop of color to your hair with dimensional results. You can add color or keep it blonde and natural. I recently had a guest come in for color blocking. It was so fun to do and by the end of the service, she loved on the blonde had strong money pieces in the front, but was only seen throughout the bottom. Do you think you could rock the block color? I love this trend, both stylish and low maintenance. #3 The Bob The bob started to blossom in the early 2000's. However, within the last year it has become a more popular trend. Bob's can be cut at any length and any angle. I absolutely love the bob hair cut, I've rocked it before and it is so fun to style. Bobs can be more blunt or shaggy with layers throughout. This look can go in many directions. The growing out processing can be a but difficult with the angle, but it's sheek and a cute modern haircut. #4 Buzz cut More and more women have started to embrace having the buzz cut. Over the past 2 years, the buzz cut has taken over in the fashion industry. Celebrities such as Lupita Nyong'o, Kate Hudson, and Halsey have been rocking the short cut. Shaving your hair is a big commitment, but for some people can be a liberating experience. If you do consider to follow this trend, keep in mind the grow out phases of your hair. #5 Low maintenance blonde: As I continue my experience behind the chair, I have noticed in 2020 that subtle balayage is one of the top trends. Balayage is a french word for hand painting. The lightener is hand painted onto the hair giving brightness, depth, flawless blend, and seamless out growth. The balayage technique can be adjusted per person. Balayage is a common technique these days and continues to gain popularity. ![]() During the winter we all know our hair can feel a lot different than normal. Usually we experience it feeling a bit more dry + brittle. With the cold dry air this is completely expected! For each of the seasons it’s important to switch up your at home regimen! Some of my favorite products are: Kevin.Murphy Leave in Repair This is really good for adding the moisture + proteins back into your hair! It also has heat protectant which is always a plus! Anti.Gravity This is great for moisturizing and calming your scalp. It is oil free so it will never make you feel too oily! Kevin.Murphy Dry Conditioner This is from his young.again line. It has so many great ingredients that add the moisture and shine you may be lacking! Those are just a few of my favorites! If you are interested in trying them out we have an online store on our website you have full access to or even feel free to stop by the salon for a blowout and we can show you just what they are about!! Stay safe and healthy this winter. xox Rita This ones for you, my fine haired friends...
Hey Boutique Babes, I'm back to talk about more tips for fine hair! As a fine hair specialist, I'm constantly asked “What can I do about my fine hair?” or “How do I make my hair look fuller?” So without any further ado… here are my top 6 hacks to make your fine hair appear fuller! Dimension Dimension is achieved when there are two or more contrasting colors in the hair. We see dimension a lot when it comes to highlights or basic balayage because we don’t lighten every piece of hair. So how does dimension make fine hair appear fuller? Well, it's almost like an optical illusion. Having multiple colors in your hair can actually trick your eyes into seeing more hair when in reality it's the same amount. Plumping Products Using products + treatments with plumping agents in them is key to making your hair fuller. Body.mass is a new favorite of mine— a leave-in plumping treatment that adds fullness and thickness while also strengthening your hair. It's made using eyelash thickening and lengthening technology. All you do is spray into damp hair, brush through to evenly distribute and dry + style as normal! My favorite KM wash/rinse combo is 100% Balancing.Wash + Plumping.Rinse! This combination is perfect because it includes a wash that will balance the PH levels of your scalp which helps regulate oil production and a rinse that helps densify and plump your hair strand to help feel thicker! Texture Spray Okay If you know me, you KNOW this is my holy grail product! I don’t think I’ve ever been more passionate about a product. So if I haven’t already told you, this is a dry powder texturizing spray. It creates spaces between each individual hair strand to give you volume + texture. Just lift your hair and spray into— rather than on your hair for extra fluff! Reducing weight Weight in your hair can be caused by two different things: Heavy products such as oils or mousse OR having too much weight at your ends. This is commonly seen when someone has a cut that's all one length. An easy trick to help reduce weight in your ends is to texturize the ends and cut off the “corners.” By doing so, your hair will gain volume and movement. Frequent Trims Having fine hair comes with the struggle of scraggly ends (If you know, you know). something as simple as making sure you get that trim every 8 weeks and keeping your hair healthy can make a huge difference in how full your hair looks. Extensions I'm sure you’re thinking “of course extensions will make your hair appear fuller” but I really wanted to add this one in due to the common misconception that extensions need to add length. Yes, extensions are great for that-- however, you can actually get them for the sole purpose of fullness as well. You can honestly match any length of hair with hand ties extension, even short hair! XO - Your fine hair specialist Alyssa How Do I Break Down My Inspo Picture? We know this is not an easy task! Your stylist starts using hair terms and you become totally lost and start agreeing to whatever they say. We have all been there and I know this because even before I became a stylist, I was a guest just like you! Let's find out how you can break down an inspiration picture to your stylist with confidence... What types of tones are you seeing? This is referring to the underlying pigment in the hair. Warm tones are red, orange and yellow. Cool tones are blue and purple. If you don’t know the difference, no worries! Ask your stylist and they will be happy to explain and help you choose what tones would be best. Do you want dimension? How much? Dimension is the contrast of dark to light. Someone who has a solid color would have no dimension. It is important to express rather you like seeing highs and lows or prefer everything to be a similar shade. Dimension helps to create more shine and fullness as well. Do you want a face pop? Almost every inspiration these days has a face pop. This refers to a brighter piece of hair around your face and it is not just for blondes. All color can be enhanced with a brighter shade in the hairline. Where would you like your hair to fall? I love this question compared to how much length are we taking off? Everyone’s view on what 1 inch is can be different, so using body references instead really helps to ensure what length is perfect for you. This also lets us decide where to cut your hair while keeping the bounce factor in mind. All hair bounces up slightly when dry, which is another reason we prefer body reference over length. Do you want face framing layers? Face framing layers are shorter pieces around your face, sometimes even hugging your face. They’re great to add some pizzazz when you put your hair up. You want to ensure that they’re the length you want and not too short. To do this, we again usually use a face reference. Those are some of the questions you can expect when receiving a service with us, along with a bunch more customized to your inspo picture. All of our stylists on #thebbbteam are trained to ask the right questions to determine how to best achieve your hair goals. XO, Brooke ♡ Oversized Bows
Over sized bows are all the trend right now. They look adorable to finish a top knot or add on top to a half up, half down style. ♡ Glitter Part I mean, say less. This is one my all-time favorite looks, especially for New Year’s Eve. ♡ Braids Braids are a simple way to get tons of compliments from the family, even if they’re only seeing it virtually. ♡ Christmas Themed Accessories I am loving scarfs, head bands and bandanas. A Christmas themed one is the way to go. Click here to shop our favorite Christmas themed hair accessories. ♡ Updos Any simple updo with curls in the front is a perfect way to dress up your look. Tag us on Instagram if you try out any of these Holiday styles. XO, Brooke We hear this question all the time! So let’s get down to it… Should you?
It is all up to you! The extensions that we use do not damage your hair. They are attached safely without tension, pulling or breakage being caused. Saying that, you can leave them in for as long as you like. We have guests who have had extensions for 2+ years and their hair is healthier than ever. However, we also have guests that take a break from their extensions and here are a few reasons why… I want to save them for (the Holidays, Spring, Summer, My Wedding)… Extension hair on average lasts about 9 months. Buying new extension hair is costly and not something someone is always ready to invest in. Sometimes our guests will take a break to keep their extension hair healthy for special events or for a time they would rather wear it. I don’t have anything going on… We hear this one a lot, especially with the current pandemic. Most people don’t have much going on and would prefer to take them out for a while. Similar reasons to the one above. I want to cut my hair and move down to one row… This is no different than someone who has tons of hair and is sick of it and wants to cut it off. Having 2-3 rows of extensions is a lot of hair. It is amazing and we looooove it, but eventually some people want to cut it shorter and remove some wefts, which we are always down for. We have fun switching up your look using extensions in new ways. Remember...extensions are not just for long hair! We love our short hair extensions just as much. My hair is long enough now… That’s right! Some people wear extensions for 9 months and actually achieve their length goals. They are then comfortable removing the extensions and flaunting their natural hair. This is actually one of the most satisfying moments as a hairstylist. Extensions get such a bad rep for damaging hair, so we love proving that a myth! So, there you have it! It is all up to you what you would like to do. If you’re only considering taking a break because you think you should or you need to, then definitely don’t. If you love your long mermaid hair, wear it as long as you want! We promise your hair and scalp are safe. XO, Brooke Day two hair is the best hair…
I always plan a blowout the day prior to my special event. I personally think day two hair looks the best. Sleep on a silk pillow case… Certain pillow cases can cause frizziness and friction in the night and cause crazy hair in the morning. Sleeping on silk will keep your hair looking perfect the next day. Night time regimen and Morning regimen… At night, I apply dry shampoo at my root to absorb oils and a hydrating spray at my ends to keep my hair healthy. I also ensure I brush all of the knots out of my hair and put it into a loose, low bun or braid. In the morning I thoroughly brush again while applying more hydrating products for my ends. I personally love Kevin.Murphy Fresh.Hair and Shimmer.Shine before bed and Kevin.Murphy Young.Again Dry.Conditioner for the morning. Minimal heat… If you plan to heat style your hair, ensure you use a heat protectant and the smallest amount of heat possible. Nothing ruins good hair like over processing it with a heat iron. Mini Styling Products… It's no secret that hair gets flat throughout the day. I love carrying around a Kevin.Murphy mini Doo.Over in my purse. It is a great way to give yourself a quick lift in the middle of the day. I hope you enjoyed my secrets on how to have a perfect hair day. If you’re interested in purchasing any of the products above, click here. XO, Brooke Being an Extension Model is a great opportunity for both the you and your stylist. The model (you) receives the service at an extremely discounted rate, while the stylist is able to gain both knowledge and experience. Being an Extension Model is sometimes half the cost of seeing one of our experienced stylists. Let’s get into what being a model means and if you would be a good fit. Who would be providing the service? The stylist you see will be certified in The Grace Hand Tied Method, which is the form of Hand-Tied Extensions we use at our salon. They will have completed the required courses and have hours of practice on a mannequin head. The only difference is that you may be one of the first real people they are trying this method on. Will I still receive custom coloring and cutting? Yes! The Extension Stylist in-training will provide all of the same steps of the service as the experienced stylists do. They will still custom color and cut your hair for seamless blending. Do you have the extra time? Extension Stylists in-training can sometimes take twice as long as an experienced stylist. On top of that, you sometimes need to come back in for adjustments between normal reservations. It is important to know this and ensure you could fit this into your schedule. Are you ok with it not being perfect? Again, these stylists are not experienced which is why they are accepting models. We ask that you be patient and understanding if there are certain things not up to our usual standard. So what are you paying for? In most model situations you are just paying for the hair, which lasts 9 months. If a stylist is extremely new, we also include the custom coloring on us as well. You will have to invest in move up reservations and maintenance following your initial application. We greatly appreciate all of our guests who commit to being Extension Models. Majority of the time, the application is seamless and the guest is very pleased. If you think you would be a good fit, please let us know. Click Here to Start Your Extension Process Today.
