Balayage vs HighLites

Picture
It can be extremely hard to decide what’s best for your hair, and the coloring route you want to take. There are so many different hair trends out now and how do you decide the best one is for you!? Lets break down two of the biggest hair trends out there now!
Balayage vs Highlights

What is a balayage? A balayage is A technique that involves hand painting the hair in sweeping motions with a brush. In other words, Hand painting highlights or low lights on to the Hair to achieve a low maintenance blended look.

So then what are highlights? Highlights create an over blonde look that start at the scalp and proceed through the ends.

Application:
A highlight application usually takes about 2-4 hours depending on hair length and thickness.
Highlights are created with lightener and foils. Foils are used to help create heat and lift the hair to the desired level of blonde. Highlights are achieved by taking small sections of hair right off the scalp and placing a foil with lightener inside.

A balayage application usually takes around 2-4 hours depending on the length and thickness of the hair. A balayage is created by using lightener and strategic placement to achieve the look that the guest desires. This technique is done by taking medium sections of  hair and hand painting lightener directly onto each section in a “v” like shape.

How balayage and highlights can be customized:
Both of these techniques are 100% customizable! A balayage is going to be the most customizable by far! Most people decide on a balayage for this specific reason.
At Brooke Bauer Boutique we have several different balayage techniques to fit exactly what you want. From an all over blonde look, to a natural and subtle sun kissed look. A balayage looks amazing on everyone.

Highlights are slightly less customizable because it creates more of a traditional blonde look. When it comes to highlights, highlights tend to start right up at the root, which one of the main difference between a balayage.
If you like a highlighted look but don’t want the foils to start right at the root there are customizable options! For example teasy highlights, which creates more of a natural blend at the root while giving the traditional look of highlights. Or a root smudge, which would help  with highlight outgrowth so you won’t see any harsh lines.

What about grey coverage:
If you are someone that struggles with covering your grays a balayage would be the best option for you. A balayage allows you to have an all over blonde look while still having a rooted lived in color appearance. A balayage creates dimension at the root which allows color for grey coverage, where as highlights would just help to blend grays out instead of covering them completely.

Maintenance: highlights require maintenance every 4 weeks. Because highlights start right up at the route for more of a traditional blonde look, maintenance is normally required every four weeks to blend out the line!
Maintenance for a balayage is a little bit different than highlights. Depending on what type of balayage is done maintenance can be anywhere from 5 to 8 weeks!

Safe Extensions For Fine Hair

Hey Boutique Babes! Alyssa here to talk about what types of extensions are safe for baby fine hair...

Halo Extensions
Halo extensions are 100% safe for all hair types, but especially for fine hair! This is mainly because halo extensions don't attach to your hair at all. In fact, they sit on top of your hair. See-- a halo extension is a thicker weft of hair on an adjustable clear string so the hair just rests on your hair. These are super awesome if you're not sure about the commitment of extensions as well! These will do absolutely no damage and are made to be taken out at the end of each day.

Hand Tied Extensions
As many of you know, Brooke Bauer Boutique rebranded last year as a salon + extension loft. As a whole, our extension specialty is hand tied. Hand tied extensions are extremely versatile and good for many different hair types including fine hair! As someone who has very fine hair, I know first hand how scary it can be getting extensions. There’s so many questions like “will they be too heavy?” “will they look fake?” “will they damage my hair?” But I'm here to put all these questions to rest.

Will they be too heavy?
Your stylist is trained in being able to tell how many wefts your hair is able to handle. Another thing to remember is to not leave your hair wet after washing your extensions. Wet hair is always heavier then dry hair so always remember to blow dry right away! Move ups are typically between 6-8 weeks, sometimes as your hair grows out the extensions can cause a bit of tension. It's completely normal because like I said-- your hair is growing so naturally your extensions are shifting downward as well. I recommend mini move ups for my fine haired friends. This way at the 4 week mark you can get them moved up nice and snug and they won't have the potential to feel heavy!

Will they look fake?
I'm sure this is something many of you are nervous about. Going from fine to full can feel drastic but I promise you between custom coloring + custom cutting it will look like you were born with this hair!

Will they damage my hair?
As long as you are going to a trained professional and doing your part at home you wont experience any damage!

How to achieve the perfect blonde tone.

2/2/2021

Picture

Achieving the perfect blonde can be a challenge. It takes patience, an educated stylist, and the perfect formulation.

Achieving the perfect blonde tone starts with a thorough consultation! Understanding your hair goal is the most important part. Asking questions like

“What do you like most about this picture?”
This question is going to tell us specifically what you like about the color in the picture, and what you are seeing.

“Do you see dimension through the ends, or is it solid blonde”
Asking this questions is a must because it will help us to understand how much blonde you want to see through the ends of her hair.

“Do you like to wear your hair up?”
When planning for the perfect blonde it’s important I ask you how you like to style your hair. If you wear their hair up often, foiling the hair line is a great way to brighten up your hair right around their face to give it an extra pop of blonde detail.

“What tones do you see in this picture?”
This is an essential question to ask when you are a blonding guest. This will help us formulate down the road. Do you like icy tones? If so, is it a grey tone or a purple tone? Do you like the bright white look? If so, is it warm toned or cool toned? Asking what tones you are seeing in your inspiration picture is key to achieving the perfect blonde.

After the lightening application, we will be  sure to let it process for the full time. This will help to get the most lift out of the product.

At the bowl, after the lightener has processed for the full time and you have been shampooed out. I like to take a towel and towel dry the hair so I can get a good look at how the hair lifted. I am already asking myself the same questions.
What level is she? What are the undertones in your hair? What is her goal?

After assessing the hair it’s time for formulate for the perfect toned blonde.
Keeping your goals in mind and the undertones of your raw lift, formulating becomes easy. I like to start by making sure I’m formulating to cancel out any unwanted tones.
For example if you want to be a cool toned, Icy blonde and there are warm undertones in the hair you first have to cancel out the unwanted tones before being able to achieve the goal. This can be done by pre toning.

Other key tips for achieving the perfect blonde, is to let the glaze/ toner sit on for the full time. This will help with the longevity of the color, which is what every blonde wants.

Achieving the perfect blonde can be difficult but with a thorough consultation everything becomes easy and breezy.

New year new hair! Right??

Who’s excited to start 2021 with a fresh look? I know I sure am!

What are we predicting here at Brooke Bauer Boutique?

COLOR BLOCKING

Color blocking is huge! There are so many creative ways to choose your own touch + completely personalize it to you. It works with fashion colors or even more natural colors.

BANGS

Bangs are back + better than ever! The curtain bangs are a huge trend we’re seeing right now. These are a lot less maintenance than those short forehead bangs. They grow out more comfortably in between your hair reservations too. Also depending on the length, they can even sit behind your ears. So much less annoying when trying to get them out of your face!

EXTENSIONS

During quarantine a lot of us did a big “at home” chop! Although it was a super fun trend at the time, I’m predicting some are going to want to go back to their mermaid length. This option is great for you boutique babes, like me, who aren’t patience enough to wait through that (what seems like FOREVER) growth period!

Can I Get Extensions With Fine Hair?

1/12/2021

Picture
Hey Boutique Babes! Alyssa here-- back to bust yet another fine hair myth…
“Can I get extensions with baby fine hair?"

I'm just going to cut to the chase. Yes, you most definitely can get extensions! But you want to make sure you receive your extensions from a reputable source because if done wrong, could potentially cause damage to your hair.

I know first hand how scary it can be to get extensions for the first time, especially with fine hair. Personally, I have short baby fine hair and that actually kept me from getting extensions for the longest time. I was so nervous that they would be too heavy or you'd be able to see them sticking out. But about 4 months ago I decided to just go for it. And let me tell you-- I'm never going back!

All of those worries I had soon faded away. I found that my two rows of 18 inch extensions were not heavy at all. I can wear my hair up and I don't feel any tugging or pulling and sleeping is just as comfortable as before.

Here at the boutique, we offer hand tied extensions. These are some of the most comfortable, gentle and customizable extensions out there! The method we chose to use is extremely versatile in the sense that basically anyone can get them. Especially someone with fine hair!

Extensions for fine hair don't need to be extremely long. In fact-- they don't need to add any length at all. If you love the length of your hair but you just want to add some volume and fullness, that's totally fine! You could get extensions with a shoulder length bob if you'd like, it's just that easy!

Do You Think You're Ready For Short Hair?

1/5/2021

Picture
Today, we're talking about having short hair and how to prepare for the short hair lifestyle. Cutting your hair is a huge decision, but overall can be the most beneficial. This can be a hard decision, however your life isn't over because of your big chop. Whether it's a maintenance issue or your hair is fried and you need some change, these are the 5 ways to determine if you are ready for short hair.

Let's start by defining short hair. As a stylist, I'd consider my short hair clients to be anyone with hair shoulder length or above. If you're the kind of person who has always had long hair or is scared of chopping your locks, I have 5 steps to determine if you're ready for short hair.

#1 Know that your hair doesn't define you:
Although your hair is a huge part of who you are, you are not your hair. The most important step is self love. If you have a mindset going into your haircut of "oh my gosh, I'm chopping off my hair. I won't have hair", you're going to freak yourself out and this can overall lower your confidence. Hair grows back, whether it's a chop or a trim. A good haircut can help boost your confidence in so many ways if you allow it to. Having less maintenance, getting ready for your day, less tangles, and not having to put your hair in the same messy bun everyday can change your schedule and make your feel more put together.

#2 You can still style your hair:
I had a guest who cut off 7 inches of her hair. It started to get mated, tangled up all the time, and weighted. After her cut, she wasn't too sure about it. "How am I supposed to style my hair?" Is the most commonly asked question from my short haired guests. Unfortunately, hair tutorials on sites  like YouTube can be hard to follow and difficult to achieve on your own. Don't be afraid to ask your stylist for easy, everyday styles. If you happen to find a picture online and want to try it out, give it go. You never know what looks good until you try it. My personal favorite short hair style is the half up/down bun. It's super simple, and keeps your hair out of your face all day.

#3 Faster styling time:
Having short hair has so many perks. Drying and styling times are less because you're working with a smaller canvas. Personally, I have had my hair go from down to my belly button and as short as my chin. Working with shorter hair is less hassle, time efficient, and easier when you're on the go. Both curling and straightening takes less time. If you still aren't ready for short hair, take a moment to think of how much time is spent styling your hair. Now, cut that time in half. It used to take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours depending on the style. Compared to having shorter hair where it takes about an hour or less.

#4 split ends who?:
While having long hair is nice, split ends can cause more breakage. This occurs when the split end continues to split up the hair shaft until it snaps off. This causes breakage through your hair. Cutting or trimming your hair helps stop the split end from traveling and helps your ends stay smooth and healthy. If you used heat on your hair, this may cause dryness from time to time or cause new split ends. Following up from your haircut, it's always important to have a good hair routine to keep your hair nice and healthy.

#5 The 4 to 8 week rule:
If you're still aren't ready for having short hair, it is important to keep up with trims. This time frame can vary depending on how fast your hair grows and when you regularly get it cut. Trims are recommended every 4 to 8 weeks. Contrary to popular belief, this will help your hair grow. Trimming your ends eliminates the chance of the split breaking your hair off.

Popular Hair Trends Of 2020

12/26/2020

Believe it or not, 2020 was a big year for new and reborn hair trends. Around March, stylists faced a time where salons were closed and had no way of working with clients. This gave clients time to have quarantine haircuts and color jobs gone wrong. If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that hair trends change constantly and without the help of our stylist things may not come out exactly as planned. Today, we're going to talk about the top 5 hair trends of 2020.

#1 Shaggy cuts

The shag cut is coming back. Finding the inspiration from the 70's, the shag and mullet are coming back. As a stylist, I love the feathered bangs and layered look. However, the mullet depends on the person. Celebrities like Selena Gomez and Hillary Duff have been rocking the feathers bang. I am loving this trend and hope it continues in 2021.

#2 Block coloring

Coloring blocking has made a huge rise this year. This trend has been blowing up on social media sites such as Tik Tok and YouTube. Coloring blocking is a fun way to add a pop of color to your hair with dimensional results. You can add color or keep it blonde and natural. I recently had a guest come in for color blocking. It was so fun to do and by the end of the service, she loved on the blonde had strong money pieces in the front, but was only seen throughout the bottom. Do you think you could rock the block color? I love this trend, both stylish and low maintenance.

#3 The Bob

The bob started to blossom in the early 2000's. However, within the last year it has become a more popular trend. Bob's can be cut at any length and any angle. I absolutely love the bob hair cut, I've rocked it before and it is so fun to style. Bobs can be more blunt or shaggy with layers throughout. This look can go in many directions. The growing out processing can be a but difficult with the angle, but it's sheek and a cute modern haircut.

#4 Buzz cut

More and more women have started to embrace having the buzz cut. Over the past 2 years, the buzz cut has taken over in the fashion industry. Celebrities such as Lupita Nyong'o, Kate Hudson, and Halsey have been rocking the short cut. Shaving your hair is a big commitment, but for some people can be a liberating experience. If you do consider to follow this trend, keep in mind the grow out phases of your hair.

#5 Low maintenance blonde:

As I continue my experience behind the chair, I have noticed in 2020 that subtle balayage is one of the top trends. Balayage is a french word for hand painting. The lightener is hand painted onto the hair giving brightness, depth, flawless blend, and seamless out growth. The balayage technique can be adjusted per person. Balayage is a common technique these days and continues to gain popularity.

During the winter we all know our hair can feel a lot different than normal. Usually we experience it feeling a bit more dry + brittle. With the cold dry air this is completely expected!

For each of the seasons it’s important to switch up your at home regimen! Some of my favorite products are:

Kevin.Murphy Leave in Repair
This is really good for adding the moisture + proteins back into your hair! It also has heat protectant which is always a plus!

Anti.Gravity
This is great for moisturizing and calming your scalp. It is oil free so it will never make you feel too oily!

Kevin.Murphy Dry Conditioner
This is from his young.again line. It has so many great ingredients that add the moisture and shine you may be lacking!

Those are just a few of my favorites! If you are interested in trying them out we have an online store on our website you have full access to or even feel free to stop by the salon for a blowout and we can show you just what they are about!!

Stay safe and healthy this winter.
